Stair Step Pallet Shelf for Craft Supplies

Hey there, friends! It’s Angie from Knick of Time, back this month with a space-saving pallet shelf for the craft room or workshop.

As any crafter knows,  our supplies tend to breed when we’re not looking, and it’s easy to run out of space to put everything, so this project helps solve that problem.  It’s perfect for small spaces where you don’t have room for large shelves.

DIY pallet shelf

First, you’ll need to construct three small crates from the bottom of a pallet.

Gail has a great tutorial on taking apart crates, but you won’t need to fully dismantle a crate for this project.

You only need to cut sections of a pallet, which will form the sides, front and back of the crate, (which are already attached together on a pallet), so most of the work is done for you.

You’ll need cut another small piece of pallet board to fit into the bottom of the crate also.  Use screws or a nails to attach it in place.

These are the same kind of crates that I used as window boxes (see more about them here).

I started out by staining the wood.  I would be painting over it, so I didn’t bother covering the crates completely.

The crates were made from different pallets, and were all different lengths, so I screwed them together “stair step” style to disguise  that.

This turned out to be my favorite part of the project, and I’ll show you why in a moment!

I painted them all white, and once dry, I added hangers on the back.

Here’s how they look at this stage.  Now they are ready to hang and fill up!

My “she shed” doubles as a photo studio, office, work space, and guest room. It has exposed studs on the original plank walls, and the pallet shelf fit perfectly between them.

By stair-stepping the crates together, it created small ledges above and below the shelves.  This gives even more space to attach cup hooks to hang paint brushes or small jars on.

I ran out of cup hooks, but there’s plenty of room to add more along the bottom of the shelf, and it allows your paint brushes to air dry well.

I didn’t waste space on the side of the ledges either.  The lower one was just wide enough to hold another jar for my stencil brushes that don’t have holes to hang them by.

This pallet shelf didn’t cost me a penny to make, because I already had a pallets, paint, and hooks.

It stores a lot in a small space too!

See you next month!
